If proper cleansing and topical treatment are not enough, an oral antibiotic may be prescribed. Oral antibiotics such as tetracycline (Achromycin V), erythromycin (ERYC, Ilotycin, and others), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin, and others), ampicillin (Omnipen, Polycillin, and others), cephalosporins, and sulfa drugs are often prescribed by dermatologists for more severe acne with many papules and/or pustules. These are often very helpful, but one cannot stay on antibiotics forever.

For women who have acne and also need birth control, hormonal therapy may be useful, especially if the acne is thought to be driven by a hormonal imbalance. Birth control pills with 50 micrograms of estrogen and low progesterone can help to control acne and are sometimes prescribed for just that purpose in women. Examples include Demulen 1/50, Demulen 1/35, Loestrin 1/20, Ortho-Novum 7-7-7, Triphasil, and TriNorinyl. In more severe cases in older women, antiandrogens such as spironolactone are sometimes used.

Isotretinoin (Accutane) is frequently used for severe acne. It usually yields great results that can markedly improve a person’s self-image and self-esteem. Isotretinoin is a strong derivative of vitamin A that significantly reduces the glands’ production of sebum and shrinks the oil glands. However, it can cause side effects, including very dry skin and mucous membranes, sore muscles and joints, bone changes, rising levels of cholesterol and blood fats, elevation of liver enymzes, and headaches. Close monitoring by a physician is necessary. Often, more than one course of treatment is necessary for very severe, chronic cases. However, people are often pleased with the results, so they are willing to put up with the side effects and risks. The biggest risk concerning isotretinoin concerns pregnancy. This drug causes birth defects, so it cannot be used if you are planning to get pregnant just before, during, or just after the course of treatment.

<b< Some doctors are reluctant to prescribe it for women of childbearing age in any case. If you are female, of childbearing age, and take this drug, a doctor may insist that you have a pregnancy test before starting, that you use not one but two methods of birth control simultaneously, and that you submit to monthly pregnancy tests. bl For very severe acne, a dermatologist may prescribe isotretinoin (Accutane) and prednisone (also sold under the brand names Deltasone, Orasone, Sterapred, and others), which may be taken orally or injected directly into the lesions.

Physical therapies for acne include liquid nitrogen, acne surgery, and corticosteroid shots. Dabbing liquid nitrogen very lightly on acne lesions causes a mild shedding of skin and improvement, especially of discrete acne cysts. Acne surgery consists of using a comedone extractor to carefully remove the contents of blackheads and whiteheads. It also includes draining pustules and cysts through a small incision. Inflamed, painful cysts also heal very quickly with local corticosteroid shots directly into the lesions. However, this is not a method for long-term control of acne, only for emergency shrinkage of large, painful lesions.

Chemical peels, dermabrasion, scar excision, and collagen injections are helpful for deep scarring resulting from severe acne. With dermabrasion, after local anesthesia is given, a high-speed mini-sander is used to remove the top layer of scarred skin the new skin grows back without as much scarring. However, this procedure poses the risk of your skin healing with light or dark spots, and it is not painless. With chemical peels, a mild, moderate, or strong acid is used to peel off the top layer or layers of skin. The new skin heals without superficial acne scars and with an evening out of overall skin tone and coloring. Local swelling, redness, and sun sensitivity are to be expected. Many deep (“ice pick”) scars are too deep for dermabrasion, and are better treated by being individually excised by a skilled dermatologic surgeon. After excision, the skin is closed. Collagen injections can also be used to temporarily fill deep acne scars.

All You Need to Know About Boarding Schools for Children with ADHD

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Monday, August 24th, 2009

Although underachievement in school is a familiar case scenario for children with ADHD, on most cases these academic failures aren’t totally reflective of what these children can be capable of. The most frustrating part to parents would be the speculation – what if these children worked harder or behaved better in class?

The underlying problem of ADHD sufferers is the inability to maintain attention and the resistance to distraction. These biologically-based inabilities alone prevent them from meeting a school setting’s intrinsic demand for self-regulation and self-direction, which are : staying put quietly in their seats, listening attentively when the teacher speaks, raising hands before talking, asking permission first if they need to go out, doing seatwork, exams, projects and other school work on time.

Boarding schools especially for children with ADHD can offer these children direction and structure, which is basically absent in most academic institutions.

General Set Up

Academics

Most ADHD boarding schools cater to younger children, usually from ages 3 to 12 years, where the child’s formation and development is the most critical. Learning programs mostly delve on teaching children how to appropriately respond to stimuli which help learning process. Most schools have well built online sites where you can peruse what they have to offer for your child. An example is the New Leaf Academy in North Carolina, a private boarding school exclusive for girls ages 10 to 14. On the site, you can check out daily activities, the academic programs as well as make virtual tours of the campus.

Social Training Programs and Activities

Most ADHD schools have specialized daily programs that will help develop a better focus and management in future life. These programs teach strategies on how to improve communication while discouraging unwanted behavior. Most of these programs are built into each day’s activities. For instance, during mealtimes children are taught proper table manners, how to enjoy food in a generally acceptable way, or how to start and engage in polite table conversations. As example, you can check a typical day schedule posted on Cedars Academy.

Certification

Until recently, many academic institutions were unwilling to evaluate a child with ADHD. However, with better understanding of the disorder, recent laws prohibit any academic institution to bypass the obligatory evaluation of a child suspected of having ADHD. Most states in the U.S have Parent Training and Information (PTI) centers as well as a Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agencies where you can check for more information.

Why ADHD Boarding School for your Child

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Friday, August 21st, 2009

Even though as parents we are less disposed to the notion of entrusting the welfare of our child with ADHD over to somebody else, yet there are those times when the household, or worse, the family itself is no panacea to the child’s immediate or prospective recovery. ADHD boarding schools exist for that reason: to provide foster love and care, when the family isn’t just enough.

Most ADHD boarding schools cater to younger children, usually from ages 3 to 12 years, where the child’s formation and development is the most critical. Take note, ADHD boarding schools differ largely from traditional boarding schools, since the latter usually don’t have the specialized training and resources to deal with the learning challenges of children with ADHD.

In the United States, there are several ADHD boarding schools strewn all over the continent. A good hour or a half of diligent searching can net you several choice leads. Most states by now have two or more selections that cater to this kind of problem, and most of them have online information pages where you can not only check programs and pricing, you can also learn more of the disorder. Some ADHD boarding schools even have pre-admission evaluation forms that can help you decide the right course of your child. One example is the Cedars Academy Boarding School.

Can your child with ADHD seamlessly enter the public education system without the benefit of special education services?

Popular prognoses say that regardless of treatment, children diagnosed with ADHD may experience difficulties in adolescence. However, the percentage of children meeting the diagnostic criteria dropped by 50% over three years since 1995, due to the improving efficiency of the treatments and better understanding of the disorder. Untreated children with ADHD also have lesser chances in adapting to difficulties in adolescence.

The AACAP recommends a multimodal treatment plan for ADHD children sufferers. Because ADHD has several problem surfaces and each needs to be attended; only the multimodal path is the most reasonable course of action. For instance, while pharmacotherapy can improve attention span while decreasing excessive physical activity, these treatments doesn’t address nor enhance the child’s function particularly in the social domain. (See: Evaluation and Treatment of ADHD, American Academy of Family Physicians, Sept 1, 2001)

Says Samuel Moore, Admissions Director of Stone Mountain School in North Carolina: “We can keep them safe, and that’s often not possible at home once they reach this age”.

The Hyperactive Child and After School Activities

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

There seems to be an increase in ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in our children lately.  It should be a goal of any good after school program to address this issue in the ADHD child.  Good after school programs to help such children requires parents to do some local research to find these special programs that keep the child busy and interested.

Physical exercise programs are very beneficial and should be one of the first considerations in searching for a program for your child.  Physical exercise programs help to stimulate the brain and at the same time burn excess energy.  Activities of a team nature help to stimulate and teach social skills and disipline.  If your child isn’t interested in team sports you might get them interested in other physical disiplines such as dance, swimming, track and field or gymnastics.  Another physical activity which may interest them is martial arts which teaches patience, self-control and self-defense.

I your child isn’t interested in sport type activities, there are alternatives that still offer an outlet for excess energy.  These programs include acting, music, art and dance.

Other activities to keep a child interested art the boy scout and girl scout programs.  These activities not only improve the child’s social skills but afford them the opportunity of doing community improvement activities and social work.  Some of these things that they do is to clean up a park or help neighbors in need.  Other activities include participation in church programs such as helping the poor or aging persons with their shopping or chores.

Some of the activities that should be a no-no to the hyperactive child are TV and video games which can be stimulating to the brain but doesn’t help the hyperactive child in burning off that excess energy.

Any program that your child is engaged in should be monitored closely to be sure that the child is progressing.  If not then the program should be changed.  Trying to keep the child as near normal as possible is challenging but rewarding.  Understanding their needs and limitations should help you in selecting the proper after school activity for your child to help them grow with fulfilling, stimulating learning exercises.

The Weird Truth About Hyperactivity And ADHD – How One Family Coped

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Saturday, August 8th, 2009

A startling report in the British press reveals that some so-called hyperactive children are just being naughty and do NOT suffer from ADHD. Experts decided to examine a group of 52 children who were supposedly hyperactive and found that only 6 were actually suffering from ADHD or some other mental disorder. This experiment , and it must be said it is a very limited one, suggests that hyperactivity and ADHD is being overestimated especially by school teachers who want a quieter life.

Here is a story which I thought I would share with you about a couple who were at the end of their rope when they had to deal with a hyperactive child. This child really had ADHD ! The mother became so desperate that she did not know where to turn. Fortunately for her, one of her university college colleagues was setting up clinical and counselling treatment units to deal with hyperactivity and ADHD.

They immediately got on well because they were both convinced that Ritalin and the other psychostimulants were no way to deal with hyperactivity and ADHD. They knew that there were alternative remedies for ADHD such as a homeopathic remedy which would be far less damaging to their child’s development. Her colleague favoured changes in diet, counselling and behavior modification.

The first thing they did was to make one change in their son’s diet. They gave him Omega 3 fatty acid supplements and followed the Durham County schools diet program which was giving some really encouraging results.

The second thing they did was to investigate the special educational needs and facilities which were on offer at the local schools for kids with ADHD. Their son very quickly began to make progress.

Both parents are convinced that the Omega 3 pills have taken the edge off their son’s hyperactivity and together with counselling on behavior modification, they have learnt parenting strategies in coping with hyperactivity. They also make sure that their son gets enough green time and exercise as that can help too in getting rid of some of the hyperactivity.

Because hyperactive kids tend to be in the front line as regards getting into trouble, they always feel that they are unloved, even by their own parents. This is where parents can help to build their self esteem – just by being affectionate and reassuring them. They also need to learn social skills as they tend to be ostracised at school and in the playground.

Coping with hyperactivity and ADHD can be summed up in changes in parents’ attitudes by taking counselling or participating in a behavior modification program, a few changes in diet and reassuring their children that ADHD should be regarded as a difference rather than a disease or a disorder. By choosing a homeopathic remedy for ADHD, parents can also help their children become calmer while applying some of the coping mechanisms I have mentioned above.
