What Is The Best ADHD Therapy Available ?

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Monday, December 21st, 2009

Do some research on the effects of medications used for ADHD therapy and you will be shocked at the lack of up to-date information available. What really shocked me was the fact that there seems to be a real shortage of trials on the adverse effects of these drugs and that most seem to be based on four months of treatment. Some trials have been limited to those who have no intolerance to stimulants or who respond to stimulants in any case. Yet Ritalin has been on the market for over forty years!

National Institute of Drug Abuse study
Let me tell you about another study. It was carried out by the University of Colorado and the National Institute of Drug Abuse. This study was to see whether the drug Concerta had a beneficial effect on children and adolescents who were both ADHD and had had a history of substance abuse (cocaine, marijuana and alcohol). There were over 300 teenagers involved.

The results were surprising in that the treatment group on Concerta after 16 weeks showed no improvement when compared to the placebo group. The study seems to suggest that Concerta is of use at all with this type of ADHD teenager who has a problem of substance abuse. Other studies on Ritalin show that after about two years, there is little or no benefit in the ADHD child continuing with this ADHD therapy.

Doubts about Ritalin and Concerta
As Ritalin and Concerta are just basically amphetamines, there are many questions to be addressed and there are not many answers about the best ADHD therapy. Many parents look for ADHD alternative therapy because they are not convinced that powerful mind altering drugs are the answer and are worried about side effects and health risks.

How come there are so many ADHD children being diagnosed nowadays? This is a really hard question to answer. Parenting styles have changed and society demands that children behave in a certain way. There is pressure from teachers and doctors to find an adequate solution to the problem. Labels seem to make things so much easier!

ADHD meds will not cure ADHD
So, medication with prescription drugs which are no more than psychostimulants does not seem to be the best ADHD therapy. Some doctors and pediatricians actually claim that ADHD symptoms can be alleviated with the use of theses drugs in up to 80% of cases. This is a hotly debated issue and while symptoms of inattention and restlessness and fidgeting seem to be alleviated, they are certainly no cure for ADHD

ADHD homeopathic remedies
Actually the best ADHD alternative therapy is a combination of behavior therapy with some medication. That medication should preferably be homeopathic remedies where there are no side effects or health risks at all. Maybe you have a pretty narrow view about this type of treatment. Why not visit my site and find out more about what is probably the best ADHD therapy available.

What Is The Ideal Diet For ADHD ? Guidelines For Parents

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Our kids are surrounded by food ads, everywhere they go. They are bombarded with these ads on TV as well so it is really hard to wean kids off processed foods and get them on to fruit, vegetables and snacks like nuts and other healthy tidbits. So, is there an ideal diet for ADHD?

The answer is that there is no diet for ADHD but certain guidelines need to be followed. These will certainly help your ADHD child.

There are encouraging reports from schools which have actually introduced a decent menu of fruit and vegetables and they avoided all the processed foods where possible. What was the result?
There was a marked decrease in behavior problems and truancy was less common.

The first guideline is to avoid sugary and colourful candy which has the famous E series of colourings (E102, E104 and E110) which are so common in kids’ foods. These have been actually linked to increased hyperactivity and other behavior disorders in children, according to the British Food Agency. Any processed food will contain additives and preservatives as well as the infamous colourings.

The second guideline regarding a possible diet for ADHD is to make sure kids have a balanced diet. Even without the problem of behavior and ADHD, this makes sense. Obesity, diabetes and other health problems which plague kids, can be avoided. You are also training them for life in teaching them what to eat.

Another guideline is to look at supplements because there have been a multitude of studies which showed that children with ADHD had certain deficiencies in zinc, iron, magnesium and the famous Omega 3, also known as essential fatty acids. These are found in certain fish so if you cannot provide them with fish, supplement this with any decent pharmaceutical grade Omega 3.

The third guideline is to get kids off ice cream and lollipops as they will contain the colourings mentioned above. Not to mention sugary snacks which are going to cause mood swings sugar crashes so they have no place in any ADHD diet regime. If you can get them on to yogurts with chocolate or fruit added, that is great. Also smoothies can be really fun to make and taste really good.

Of course diet for ADHD is not everything and treatment with conventional prescribed psychostimulants will have to be considered as a possible option. However, there are alternative treatments available and the best one is an ADHD homeopathic remedy. The great thing about this type of treatment is that there are no side effects and no health risks either. But this is not publicised very much, mainly due to certain lobbies and ignorance. Why not find out more about this type of ADHD treatment?

Discover what is the best diet for ADHD available. Experts now tell us that child behavior programs combined with a natural treatment for ADHD is by far the most effective ADHD treatment. Robert Locke is a Health enthusiast who specializes in Children’s Health. He has written extensively on ADHD.

Is There A Difference Between ADHD and ADD?

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Friday, December 18th, 2009

I bet you did not know that Hippocrates, the father of medicine, described the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in some children he had observed. So this mental condition goes back a long way!

At the time there was no need to establish the difference between ADHD and ADD as the condition did not really have a name. Two and half thousand years on,it is a pity that neither a reliable and totally objective test exists nor a cure.

But is there a difference between the ADHD and ADD? There seem to be a lot of labels around and these multiply when we have to consider co-morbid disorders such as OCD (Obsessive compulsive Disorder). But let us keep things simple and stick to the difference between ADD and ADHD.

In the early twentieth century British pediatrician called George Still ( no pun intended!) described symptoms of fidgeting, inattention and hyperactivity as belonging to a specific condition.

In the 1970s, this condition was given the label of MDD (Minimal Brain Damage) which was alarming to say the least. As research developed, it was shown that there was no brain damage at all. It was simply an imbalance of the chemicals in the brain, the neurotransmitters, and was a disorder.

Then in the 1980s the term ADD was widely used and that stands for attention deficit disorder. But that did not take into account the element of constant motion and hyperactivity which is a common symptom in a lot of the children and adults with this condition.

Nowadays the term ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) was coined as a generic name for this condition. But as there is a difference between ADHD and ADD, ADHD is divided into three subtypes.

The first type is Hyperactive/Impulsive Type where the symptoms of impulsivity and squirming are the most noticeable. Then we have the Inattentive Type where lack of focus and concentration seem to be dominant and hyperactivity is not a problem. This in fact could also be described as ADD. The third type is the Combined Type where both disruptive behavior and distractability are predominant.

The difference between ADHD and ADD is now seldom mentioned as the umbrella ADHD term has become widely accepted.

There is no cure and millions of children are put on psychostimulant drugs which seems to address the problem of restlessness and does indeed help the children to focus at school. The only problem is that these medications have a lot of side effects and their long term use has been called into question.

ADHD homeopathic remedies do not have any of these problems but are not backed by powerful lobbies. Why not find out more about these from my site below, and look at this condition from a different perspective to that of the pharmaceutical companies? You will be very glad you did.

Ritalin “Kiddie Cocain”

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Ritalin, as classified by the D.E.A. (Drug Enforcement Agency) is a Schedule II narcotic “the same classification as cocaine”. Doctors prescribe this medication for children. Children, as we are all aware of have currently developing brains. This medication, commonly known as “Kiddie Cocaine” is extremely harmful to developed as well as undeveloped neurological issues. In some schools, as much as 20% of the students are prescribed Ritalin.

There are both short-term and long-term side effects of the harmful medication.

Short-term Effects:

Long-term Effects:

Frequently, insurance companies cover only costs of “traditional” treatments such as p.c.p. (Primary Care Physicians) or medication costs. Many Americans are mesmerized by the “quick fix” solutions offered by doctors by way of medications. That said, Americans are more apt to take a pill for medical issues rather than attempt an alternate method or holistic approach.

Shortcuts To Learrning About ADHD

King Arthur | Articles from the Web | Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

You could spend your whole life learning about ADHD. I sometimes think I have! Here are a few shortcuts to getting through the ADHD jungle.

Diet and ADHD

Can sugar, candy and pop increase hyperactivity in ADHD kids? Very probably not. I can tell you though that there is now a study which shows that fish oils (Omega 3) can actually improve ADHD kids’ learning abilities and attention spans.

The study was done by the University of South Australia. They gave 132 children the fish oils together with evening primrose oil and they found that about 50% showed definite improvement in ADHD symptoms. This is a higher success rate than Ritalin, which as you know is an amphetamine like drug (methylphenidate) and which has numerous sinister side effects which range from weight issues to depression and insomnia.

Did you know that certain studies have shown that ADHD children seem to have higher levels of phthalates in their urine? These phthalates are contained in cling film, food and beverage packaging, cosmetics, shower curtains and of course toys. I am not saying that these chemical plasticizers are causing ADHD but they do seem to have an effect on the severity of ADHD symptoms.

How can you avoid them? You can buy safer plastics with the PETE label and this applies especially to toys for kids. In addition more fresh organic foods can be bought and thus help you to avoid this risky plastic material. The FDA is actually under pressure now to issue some warnings and they say more studies need to be done.

ADHD Meds

It is a pity that the FDA is not so rigorous about powerful mind altering drugs prescribed in tons across the nation for ADHD children, who are too hyperactive and inattentive for our society. They therefore have to be medicated. There is a sinister ring to all this but many parents have taken steps to learn about ADHD now, and they will have nothing to do with meds which cause more problems for their kids than they solve.

While learning about ADHD, they are more and more convinced that there is a safer alternative. Homeopathy has been scorned by many in the medical community but they would do well to take a leaf out of the UK’s attitude to complementary medicine which is gaining great popularity over there. Many medical centres offer alternatives to conventional medicines. They happily share the same roof and have a much more tolerant attitude to the fact that alternatives are possible and that in many cases, such as learning about ADHD, there can be a safer, more effective solution. You can find out about this safer and cheaper solution from the link below this article.
